10 Atmospheric rivers hit California with more to come

Warm atmospheric river slams into California

The High Sierra has reported more then 50ft of snow over this winter and more is on the way. The Central Valley has been hit with levee breaks on the Pajaro River forcing evacuations. The Feather River has risen to the point in Oroville cutting off residents and creating an island. California Sheriff and Fire agencies report of dozens rescues including many swift-water rescues.

Governor Newsom and president Biden both declaring state and federal disasters allowing funding making more resources available to those effected. California and National Guard deployment has been authorized. However due to the excessive drought and fire, infrastructures are failing, resulting in very difficult rescues and support to reach many in flooded and mountainous regions.

In the hard hit San Bernardino mountains, structure collapse and isolation have taken 5 lives so far.

What makes these storms so difficult is the origin of each storm. Colder storms from the Alaska bring major amounts of snow to low evaluations. Then warmer storms coming from Hawaii cause that snow to melt at lower evaluations along with heavy moisture create massive amounts of water falling down mountains and overloading exacerbated rivers and reservoirs.

Snow becomes heavier as it accumulates moisture on roofs and trees causing catastrophic structural failure killing occupants, downing trees taking power lines and blocking roadways already snow covered.

Now, another warm wet Hawaiian atmospheric river is expected on Monday night stressing an already battered California.

What does this mean for surf in California? Well, depending on your location, the most southern part of California (San Diego) will be your only bet until rains up north subside. These heavy rains are washing everything natural and human made to the coast. This includes hazardous chemicals and waste. It normally takes 72 hours to show improvement in ocean water conditions, however these storms have been incredibly intense, therefore constant monitoring is required to ensure good ocean health and yours too.

Stay tuned for all the latest California surf and ocean conditions 🤙
